I am excited to announce I am showing from July 7th through August 1st in the Layers of Meaning exhibition hosted by the Propeller Art Gallery in Toronto, Canada.

This show demonstrates the different ways that artists have approached their work in these recent times, finding layers of meaning through art. Works include encaustic paintings, sculpture, vessels, prints, photography and mixed media that showcase this medium’s unique ability to channel artistic expression in so many diverse ways. All works in the show incorporate hot wax encaustic techniques. Encaustic artforms are created using molten, pigmented beeswax. Heat is used at every stage of the process. The word encaustic comes from the Greek enkaustikos which means to burn in.

Exhibitions Director Brandon Long says "We received entries from all over the United States – 82 artists from 15 states. Our juror, Daniel Graham, no doubt had many difficult choices to make in narrowing over 254 submitted works down to the twenty-one accepted works that best fit the contemporary landscape theme of the exhibition."

How exciting!!!

]]><![CDATA[Yellowstone NP]]>Mon, 27 May 2019 07:00:00 GMThttps://www.carriebaxter.com/news/yellowstone-npI had a wonderful time at Yellowstone National Park, exploring and simply enjoying the mysterious places. With so many amazing things to see, it's hard for me not to be inspired to create new works. I saw wildlife every day, including bears, bison, elks, pronghorns, and deer, as well as a bald eagle, golden eagle, moose, coyote, and a wolf. Throughout the week I enjoyed the many breathtaking landscapes of mountains, lakes, river beds, and prairie grass lands, and I also experienced the magic of the numerous geysers, mud pots, and hot springs that are sprinkled throughout the park. Always one of my favorites, I caught myself spending a lot of time examining the curious structure of the bacterial mats surrounding these features; just fascinated by the colors, patterns, and forms they encompass. I'll admit, I ended up taking A LOT of close up pictures of these mesmerizing natural abstractions.

Most of my days were relatively unplanned, so it was very refreshing to be able to start the day with a few destinations in mind, but still have the freedom to simply stop and pull out my sketchbook whenever I desired. It feels so rare of an opportunity these days to be able to pause yourself and enjoy a moment without the pressure of having to stick to a strict schedule of times and destinations. It's an uncommon enough thing for us humans to do anymore, and I feel we all need to just go exploring now and again.

It's been a few months since I've moved and been away from my Exhibitions Curator position at the Freeport Art Museum, so it is really nice to stretch my legs, so to speak, by executing the final stages of putting this show together by installing the exhibit in their gallery space. I am very pleased at how the show turned out so I hope many visitors have the opportunity to come see the show while it is on display in the Hugh N. Ronald Gallery.
